The Federal Ministry of Labour and Employment has ordered the immediate closure of African Refractory and Allied Products Company (ARAP) in Ogun State over reported violations of occupational health and safety standards.
The directive was confirmed in a statement issued on Thursday in Abuja by Annah Daniel, Head of Press and Public Relations at the ministry, who outlined the urgent measures taken to protect workers.
Minister of State for Labour and Employment, Nkeiruka Onyejeocha, ordered the facility's immediate shutdown pending a comprehensive investigation. The move aims to protect the welfare and rights of employees who have been exposed to unsafe working conditions.
The closure followed an inspection by the Ministry’s Occupational Safety and Health Department at ARAP’s facility along Km 46 of the Ikorodu-Sagamu Expressway in Ogijo, Ogun State, where multiple safety violations were reportedly observed.
The inspection uncovered hazardous working conditions, including workers’ prolonged exposure to silica dust—a substance known to cause serious health risks. Authorities acted swiftly to prevent further harm.
Preliminary findings also revealed regulatory infractions, including irregularities in licence renewal and discrepancies between declared operations and actual production. According to the ministry, these constitute breaches of Section 30 of the Factories Act.
The statement noted that allegations concerning paternity issues are under review, adding that the immediate priority remains ensuring strict compliance with occupational safety standards and protecting employees from further risk or harm.
It further stated that a joint inspection and investigative team has been established to assess compliance with health and safety regulations, evaluate operational standards, and provide recommendations to prevent future violations at the facility.
The ministry reiterated the government’s zero-tolerance stance on safety breaches, emphasising that workers’ welfare, protection, and rights remain paramount. It also urged other industries to strictly adhere to occupational safety laws and regulations.
