Intrepid Potash has been selected to receive $139-million in funding from the US Department of Agriculture (USDA) to support construction of its planned sulphate of potash (SoP) project, including a manufacturing facility in New Mexico, the company announced on October 27, 2026.
The funding is facilitated through the USDA’s Fertilizer Investment and Expansion for Long-Term Domestic Supply programme. If constructed, the facility would have an annual production capacity of approximately 220,000 tonnes of SoP, adding a new product to Intrepid’s portfolio and expanding its presence in specialty fertiliser markets.
The project is in advanced stages of planning, engineering and evaluation, but estimates remain subject to final engineering, completion of the award process, fulfilment of grant conditions and a final investment decision, which is targeted for late 2027.
“We welcome the US government’s confidence in the SoP project,” said Intrepid CEO Kevin Crutchfield. “This possible future project can be a pivotal one for Intrepid since it allows for turning American minerals into a fertiliser product that American farmers need”.
Crutchfield added that the company remains committed to disciplined capital deployment and generating attractive long-term returns on invested capital as it continues to evaluate the project ahead of FID.
Intrepid is currently the only US producer of muriate of potash (MOP). The company also produces Trio, a specialty fertiliser delivering a low-chloride source of potassium, magnesium and sulphate in a single particle. It operates solar evaporation and underground mining facilities in New Mexico and Utah.
