The Executive Chairman of the Presidential Initiative on Compressed Natural Gas (Pi-CNG), Ismaeel Ahmed, said on Wednesday that the reduction in transportation costs promised by President Bola Tinubu has already begun to materialise, with the number of CNG refuelling stations rising from fewer than 10 before 2023 to 90 nationwide.
Speaking in an interview on Channels Television, Ahmed said the initiative, launched by Tinubu, has attracted investor backing and is focused on creating an enabling environment for the private sector to drive the expansion of CNG infrastructure and adoption.
He noted that Nigerians had already started using CNG-powered vehicles and electric vehicles, describing the shift as evidence that the transition to cheaper and cleaner transportation alternatives is underway.
The growth in CNG refuelling infrastructure is central to the Federal Government’s plan to reduce the cost of transportation, which has remained elevated following the removal of petrol subsidy in 2023. CNG is significantly cheaper than petrol and diesel, and the government has positioned it as a key pillar of its energy transition and cost-of-living relief strategy.
