Impala Rustenburg has appointed two women to senior operational leadership positions, marking firsts for the platinum group metals operation and reflecting the growing contribution of women in senior mining roles.

Nonkululeko (Nonku) Mosikare has been appointed executive head of mining for the four-shaft South Shaft complex, while Nandipha Nxiweni has been appointed general manager of Bafokeng Rasimone Platinum Mine (BRPM) South shaft, the company announced on September 23, 2026.

Mosikare joined Impala in 2010 after graduating with a BSc in Mining Engineering from the University of the Witwatersrand, having been an Impala Rustenburg bursary recipient. She progressed from shift supervisor at 1 Shaft through roles including mine overseer and acting mine manager. As the first woman appointed to an executive head of mining position, she is passionate about mentorship, developing emerging talent and supporting greater gender diversity in mining.

Nxiweni's mining career began in 2009 as a learner official after Impala Rustenburg sponsored her studies. She has since progressed through roles including miner, shift supervisor, mine overseer and mine manager at 12 Shaft before taking on her current position.

Impala Rustenburg CE Moses Motlhageng said the appointments were based on experience, qualifications and performance. "These are two of the most demanding operational roles in our company, with production targets, responsibility for the safety of thousands of people and daily operational challenges," Motlhageng said. "Nonku and Nandipha were appointed because they have the experience and skills to deliver on the role requirements."

Motlhageng noted that several other women have recently been appointed to roles including mine manager, shift supervisor, safety officer and section geologist, demonstrating how performance creates pathways to career growth. "Several women achieved their platinum miner status last year, which is a qualification earned at the rock face," he said.

Motlhageng stressed that talent must be supported by clear development pathways, practical training, mentorship and programmes that prepare employees for greater responsibility. Creating an enabling workplace also requires appropriate equipment and facilities, a strong focus on safety and an environment in which disrespect is not tolerated.

"When our people show ability and ambition, it is our responsibility to make sure there is a clear path in front of them and that they have what they need to walk it," Motlhageng said. "That means providing practical training, backing capable employees and putting deserving candidates forward for opportunities."
