De Beers Group's Science & Technology division has launched SynthDetect 2, a new desktop instrument designed to make diamond screening faster and more automated.
The next-generation screening device can reduce the time required to scan a full tray of diamonds from about 30 minutes to less than five minutes, Creamer Media reported on September 15, 2026.
SynthDetect 2 was developed with input from diamond manufacturers, laboratories and retailers to better integrate screening technology into their existing operations.
According to De Beers, the instrument can screen a wider range of diamonds and jewellery than earlier versions while requiring less operator input. It also generates reports automatically and supports software updates.
The company said the combination of higher screening speed, increased throughput and automation is intended to improve productivity and reduce screening costs.
De Beers Science & Technology senior vice-president Sarandos Gouvelis said industry collaboration played a central role in developing the new instrument.
“We have worked closely with industry partners to ensure SynthDetect 2 is not only tailored to meet diamond companies’ screening requirements, but also to meet their operational needs. Through this process of collaboration, we are proud to introduce SynthDetect 2, providing the trade with an instrument that will integrate seamlessly into their operations, marrying outstanding technical performance with enhanced speed, cost and efficiency,” Gouvelis said.
The original SynthDetect was introduced in 2017, followed by SynthDetect XL in 2018. Both instruments were designed to screen multiple diamonds set in jewellery without requiring a probe.
SynthDetect 2 is being demonstrated at De Beers' Show & Tell event at the Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre during the Hong Kong Gem & Jewellery Show.
